To our valued California customers, well it’s here, ammunition background checks start July 1.  But don’t worry, as long as you have a clean record, there are 3 possible ways for you to pass the background check:

  1. If you have a registered firearm, and your driver’s license information matches the information when you bought your gun (for example, you haven’t moved and your address is the same) then you will ask us to submit the “Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check” also called the “AFS Match” option.  The fee is only $1, and approval is expected to take only 2 to 3 minutes.
  • OR –
  1. If you have a valid Certificate of Eligibility (COE), then you will ask us to submit the “COE Verification Process.” The fee is only $1, and approval is expected in 2 to 3 minutes.
  • OR –
  1. If neither 1 nor 2 apply, you will ask us to submit the “Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check.” There will be detailed information that we have to collect from you and submit to DOJ.  The fee for this is $19, and approval will take an unknown amount of time.

Also, if you are a law enforcement representative, as defined by Penal Code section 30352 (e), you are exempt from the background check requirement, and there will be no need for us to submit a record of your purchase.

There are additional details to the background check program, which you can read about at  https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/apap, but these are the basics.

And please note, the fees are not ours to keep.  This is what CA DOJ is charging for these background checks.

And finally, to our valued customers outside of California, we will miss you!  Unbelievably, due to the background check regulation, we will no longer be able to sell you (because you don’t have a California’s driver’s license).  Of course, California DOJ is making up the lost sales, to us and all ammunition vendors hurt by this regulation (in our dreams!)…..
